NJPAC brings the joy of dance, music and theater directly into your classroom with In-School Programs. Our Teaching Artists create stimulating performing arts experiences that engage student’s imaginations and encourage their creative self-expression. Residency participation strengthens cooperative skills, develops discipline, and builds self-confidence.

Early Learning Through the Arts ©

14 instructional/lesson development sessions plus a full day of professional development at NJPAC and a Family Arts Workshop at the school.

Infuse your classroom with arts strategies! NJPAC teaching artists, working directly with teachers and students, model curriculum-based performing arts experiences in the classroom. The collaborative approach enables teachers to incorporate the arts into their daily lessons while engaging young people in creative learning experiences. When these activities are woven into the curriculum, the arts become a new way of teaching, learning and knowing. Each Early Learning residency is unique because NJPAC teaching artists are equipped to address a variety of developmental domains and subject areas pertinent to the early childhood classroom.

Explore-A-Story
Students become playwrights, actors, and directors as they explore literary classics and significant moments in history through creative storytelling. Students develop their ability to work as a community while identifying key themes and deepening their understanding of story structure and character development. This artistic endeavor will culminate in a live presentation of their work as well as an anthology of student generated text.

Devised Theater
In this dynamic residency, students are introduced to the process of creating a collaborative theater piece. Students discover their collective voice while simultaneously strengthening their acting, playwriting, and cooperation skills. The fusion of individual thought with group opinion fuels the development of an original presentation that is performed at the end of the residency and published in a written anthology for every student to take home and enjoy.

Poetic Justice
Poetic Justice residencies encourage young people to find their voice through crafting their own verse. Students are asked to create poetry as a critical response to issues pertinent to themselves and their communities. Along with developing their writing ability, students will learn how to present their poetry with confidence and style. These young poets share their original works in a culminating performance and written anthology that will have your school snapping their fingers in applause.

Musical Theater
Musicals engage audiences through the magical integration of song and dance within a story. Students who participate in our musical theater residencies will work with a professional teaching artists and accompanist to develop their creativity and collaboration skills in order to successfully perform this vibrant style of theater. Students will rehearse scenes, practice songs, and learn dances from musicals that range from the classics of the Golden Era to contemporary pieces that populate Broadway today. The performance will showcase the students’ artistic abilities as they work as an ensemble to present an enlivening montage of some of the most entertaining moments in musical theater history.

Movement Matters
Participating classroom students will explore the concepts of time, space and energy as a group through the discipline of dance. Through collaboration and team work, the classroom becomes a laboratory of creative exploration and academic innovation as students learn to attach meaning to words and ideas through imagery and action. Students will present their developing dance skills in a performance that they will help choreograph under the guidance of the teaching artist and accompanist.

Tap Dance
Our Tap Dance residency captures students and teachers alike with its unforgettable rhythmic patterns and style. This program brings America’s oldest form of dance to students using moving musical elements such as beat, syncopation, and improvisation. Students will dance down the timeline of Tap history, learning legends old and new and discovering what makes Tap such an iconic American art form. The performance is sure to be a toe-tapping sensation!
Grades 3–8

Hip-Hop Dance
Through our Hip Hop Dance residency, students experience the high-energy of Hip Hop dance and learn the history behind this popular art form. The program emphasizes the impact of this youth-led movement by highlighting the elements of Hip Hop–Breakdance, MC’ing, DJ’ing, and Graffiti–and their contributions to New York City history and youth culture. Students will come away from this program with an understanding of how young Americans, just like themselves, created an art form that inspired a generation and still moves throughout the landscape of American history. Get ready for a performance that is sure to bring down the house!

Dancing Classrooms™: New Jersey
Program Package: 19 one-hour sessions plus a Family Arts Workshop and a culminating performance at the school Dancing Classrooms™ builds the self-esteem of the young ladies and gentlemen who participate in the program as they learn to tango, waltz, and swing. These students are taught ballroom and social dances from around the globe while learning to cooperate and treat themselves and their peers with respect. The vibrancy of world culture is brought to life in an elegant performance that will have your students asking, “May I have one more dance?”

Colors of the Rainbow
Colors of the Rainbow Team Match Fifth-grade students who take part in the Dancing Classrooms™ program have the option of participating in the Colors of the Rainbow Team Match. Six ladies and six gentlemen from each class are selected to represent their school in pursuit of the Grand Finale Trophy at NJPAC’s Victoria Theater in late spring. Space is limited.

Music

Jazz Instrumental 
Get your music classroom swinging with a residency that immerses students in the history and language of jazz. Professional musicians collaborate with music educators to present fun, interactive lessons that strengthen students’ performance and improvisation skills while deepening their knowledge of this uniquely American art form.

Vocal Music 
Whether your students dream of being the next American Idol or of singing at the Met, this residency is for you. Young vocalists in grades 6–12 will explore the potential of their voices and develop skills that are essential to being a professional singer, including proper breathing and air support, posture, range extension and tone quality.
