Summer Programs Overview

Discover, create and grow in the arts at NJPAC this Summer!

New Jersey Performing Arts Center offers Summer Programs in Jazz, Dance, Vocal Music, Hip Hop, Musical Theater, Comedy and Improv. 2017 classes are being held from June 27 to August 11. Extended day options are available for most programs. Learn more about what we offer, who is eligible and what is required.

All programs take place at NJPAC’s Center of Arts Education-24 Rector Street, Newark, NJ unless otherwise noted.

Young Artist Summer Intensive (YASI)

​NJPAC faculty provide a positive and nurturing learning environment for students to develop their inner artist. Every level of the Young Artist Summer Intensive builds skills in music, dance, and theater, and provides the opportunity to create in the performing arts through a maker lens.

Advanced Division:

In the Advanced program, students dedicated to the performing arts, hone skills and build self confidence in a five week intensive in Dance, Devised Theater, or Musical Theater.

Students will major in dance, vocal music or musical theater.
Ages: 12 - 18
June 27 - July 27, 2017
9:00am - 4:00pm
Tuition: $1,250 
An audition is required to be placed in the Advanced Division. Audition dates are March 18, 2017 and April 29, 2017. Students must be registered in order to audition.

Artisan Division:

In Artisan, emerging artists study voice, dance, and devised theater and begin to develop a performing arts portfolio.

Ages: 12 - 18
July 17 - August 11, 2017
9:00am - 3:30pm
Tuition: $1,100
An audition is required to be placed in the Artisan Division. Audition dates are March 18, 2017 and April 29, 2017. Students must be registered in order to audition.

Apprentice Division:

Apprentice is an introductory program in which young artists with little or no experience explore voice, dance, and devised theater.

Tuition: $650 per session

All-Female Jazz Residency

All-Female Jazz Residency

Geri Allen, Artistic Director

Young Women find inspiration and build community in this one week Jazz immersion program. Students will refine their instrumental or vocal skills and work intensely with respected jazz musicians. The program includes individual lessons, small ensemble work, industry panel discussions, field trip to landmark jazz institutions, and culminates in a final student showcase.

  • Ages: 14 - 25
  • July 9 - 15, 2017
  • Overnight residency at Rutgers University- Newark 
  • Tuition: $1,400 for on campus residents; $1,050 for commuters

Jazz and R&B Intensive

Jazz and R&B Intensive

Explore the creativity and vibrancy of Latin, Classic Jazz, and R & B. This week-long intensive will enrich your repertoire with different methods for musicianship, ensemble work, listening, improvisation, and performance. NJPAC’s Jazz Faculty will guide you through a cultural journey and take your vocal, instrumental and songwriting skills to the next level.

Hip-Hop Institute

Hip-Hop Intensive

Students explore the five elements of hip hop: (1) DJ; (2) Graffiti; (3) MC; (4) Break Dancing; and (5) Knowledge of self. Explore the rich history and discover how this artistic movement became a significant part of American culture and a powerful vehicle for self-expression.

NJPAC Summer Filmmakers

NJPAC Summer Filmmakers

Students learn collaborative filmmaking and media arts, media literacy, camera, editing, and storytelling through digital video production. Participating students create narrative, documentary, or experimental short films and develop web content. The program culminates in a public film screening of the students' work.
