Summer Programs Overview

Discover, create and grow in the arts at NJPAC this Summer!

New Jersey Performing Arts Center offers Summer Programs in Jazz, Dance, Vocal Music, Hip Hop, Musical Theater, Comedy and Improv. 2016 classes are being held from June 27 to August 12. Extended day options are available for most programs. Learn more about what we offer, who is eligible and what is required.

 

Young Artist Summer Intensive (YASI)

Young Artist Summer Intensive (YASI)

Advanced Division:

A multi-week performing arts intensive. Students major in one performing arts discipline while taking additional classes in the other disciplines to round out their skill set in music, dance and theater. A final showcase takes place at NJPAC.
Audition Required.

  • Students will major in dance, vocal music or musical theater.
  • Ages: 12 - 18
  • June 27 - July 29, 2016
  • 9:00am - 4:00pm
  • Tuition: $1,250 
  • An audition is required to be placed in the Advanced Division. Auditions will be held on March 19, 2016 at NJPAC. Completed registration is required to audition.

Apprentice Plus Division:

Students refine their skills and work towards becoming a triple threat in this four-week intensive in music, dance and theater. Students engage their creativity through improvised scenes and dance sequences. A final showcase will take place at NJPAC.

  • Ages: 12 - 18
  • July 11 - August 5, 2016
  • 9:30am - 3:30pm
  • Tuition: $1,100
  • An audition is required to be placed in the Apprentice Plus Division. Auditions will be held on March 19, 2016 at NJPAC. Completed registration is required to audition.

All-Female Jazz Residency

All-Female Jazz Residency

Geri Allen, Artistic Director

A one-week intensive for young women to build their skills in jazz studies. Students are given the opportunity to work with some of the most respected jazz musicians in the field. A final showcase will take place along with field trips to local jazz institutions.

  • Ages: 14 - 25
  • July 10 - 16, 2016 • Overnight residency at a local university
  • Tuition: $1,400 for on campus residents; $1,050 for commuters
  • No auditions are required.

The Second City at NJPAC

The Second City at NJPAC

NJPAC is excited to collaborate with The Second City this summer to bring programs in Improv and Comedy to teens and adults alike!  Based in Chicago since 1959, The Second City is a world renowned comedy enterprise, which helped launch the careers of stars like Tina Fey, Steve Carell and Mike Myers.

Teen Improv & Sketch Comedy Workshop:

Classes explore the fundamentals of improvisation as taught and performed by The Second City. Students develop skills in creative thinking, self-confidence, listening, brainstorming, team building, empathy and communication. A final showcase will take place at NJPAC.

  • August 1 - 12, 2016
  • 9:30am - 3:30pm
  • Tuition: $750
  • No auditions are required.

Adult Improvisation & Comedy Writing Immersion:

Students experience the vitality of creating sketches and improvisation. Participants will learn new skills and make new friends! A final showcase will take place at NJPAC.

  • Ages: 19 and up
  • August 8 - 12, 2016
  • 9:30am - 3:30pm
  • Tuition: $300
  • No auditions are required.

From the Inside Out:

This groundbreaking program offers a class in improvisation for teens diagnosed with Aspergers’ Syndrome and/or Autism. Students explore relationships and social cues in classes that focus on ensemble and team building. The one-week program provides a safe and fun environment where students can explore and challenge themselves.

Hip-Hop Institute

Hip-Hop Intensive

Students learn the elements of Hip Hop, including MCing, DJing, graffiti, break dancing, beatboxing, spoken word, sound engineering and more! Classes explore the history of Hip Hop and how it is a powerful vehicle of self expression. A final showcase will take place at NJPAC.

  • Ages: 10 - 16
