Christian McBride with Esperanza Spalding: One on One
Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding, the innovative, genre-bending composer, bassist and vocalist, joins bassist Christian McBride in an afternoon of conversation and music in the intimate Victoria Theater.
Esperanza Spalding’s work, grounded in jazz traditions but never bound by them, has won her four Grammy Awards and brought her onstage at the Oscars, the Nobel Prize ceremony, the White House, and with Prince and Herbie Hancock. She is appearing at NJPAC during a weekend-long celebration of saxophonist Wayne Shorter, a musician she calls “one in a million.”
NJPAC Jazz Advisor Christian McBride, the recently named Artistic Director of the Newport Jazz Festival, is a five-time Grammy Award-winning bassist-composer who, since the early ‘90s, has recorded over 300 dates as a sideman and released albums as a leader since ’95. Aside from various stints with Sting, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Roy Haynes, John McLaughlin and George Duke, among others, McBride tours consistently with his trio and his quintet, Inside Straight. He also fronts the Christian McBride Big Band, whose album The Good Feeling won a 2012 Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album.
