Gladys Knight / The O'Jays

An evening of classic soul and R&B with Gladys Knight ("Midnight Train to Georgia," "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me," "Neither One of Us") and The O’Jays ("Use Ta Be My Girl," "For the Love of Money," "Stairway to Heaven," "Love Train")

The harmonious pairing of Gladys Knight and the O’Jays, among the most enduring, distinctive artists in the history of American soul and R&B, makes for a red-hot double-bill in NJPAC’s Prudential Hall.

Having begun her illustrious career as the lead vocalist of Gladys Knight & The Pips – with whom she recorded such hits as "Every Beat of My Heart," "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," "If I Were Your Woman," "Best Thing to Ever Happen to Me," and "Midnight Train to Georgia" – Gladys Knight has since gone on to score No. 1 hits on the pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. A versatile performer whose voice remains one of the most powerful and expressive in all of American pop, Knight has also extended her credits on television, film and stage, including roles in Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself and on Broadway in Smokey Joe’s Café. “Knight’s gloriously intact vocals show why she remains the blueprint for every serious female soul singer,” says The Guardian.

Knight shares the evening with vintage soul legends The O’Jays. Known for decades for their ultra-rich harmonies, this quintessential vocal group produced a string of classic pop and R&B hits, including “Back Stabbers,” “Love Train,” “I Love Music,” “Used to Be My Girl," and “For the Love of Money.” The O’Jays have been inducted into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Today their smooth, high-energy style of performing remains as electrifying as ever. “The O'Jays' traditional soul music method – focused, impassioned singing in service of full-bodied songs – will always triumph over the new R&B style, with its emphasis on style and high-tech dazzle,” says The Los Angeles Times.
