‘Always dream big’

Here’s a look at the culminating performance of this year’s Disney Musicals in Schools

Creating what has to be NJPAC’s largest musical theater cast, some 350 third- through fifth-graders assembled in Prudential Hall in late February for a showcase performance under the banner of Disney Musicals in Schools.

Hosted by Syndee Winters, who portrays Nala in Broadway’s The Lion King, the fourth annual Student Share Celebration featured numbers from Disney favorites, presented by seven schools: Berkeley Elementary School in Bloomfield, Mahatma K. Gandhi School-PS 23 in Jersey City, Asbury Park School District, Grover Cleveland School in Rahway, and Hawkins Street School, Camden Street School and First Avenue Elementary School, all in Newark. The Disney Musicals in Schools program provides them with the resources and instruction to stage a KIDS version of a musical like Aladdin or The Jungle Book in their schools, planting the seeds of a drama department.

Having the opportunity to study theater in middle school “helped shape me into the person I am today,” Winters told the students, adding, “Always dream big.”
