Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

"Movement that’ll move you” (New York magazine) is guaranteed for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s 20th anniversary engagement at NJPAC: dazzling programs that combine new works with masterpieces like Revelations.

America’s premier modern dance company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is known around the world for its vibrant fusion of modern dance, ballet and other styles. “The Ailey dancers set the stage on fire with contemporary repertory. Talk about electrifying,” writes The Chicago Sun-Times. “The dancers wrapped their bodies and souls around works created for them.”

All programs at NJPAC will include the full-length Revelations, Ailey’s signature masterpiece that pays tribute to African-American cultural heritage, set to set to spirituals and blues. Revelations is classified by The Los Angeles Times as “the most beloved modern dance creation by anyone, anywhere ...”

New Jersey premieres this season are Jamar Roberts’ Members Don’t Get Weary, set to music by jazz legend John Coltrane;  Talley Beatty’s Stack-Up, with songs from the disco era by Earth, Wind & Fire and others; and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar’s Shelter, a powerful statement about homelessness and humanity, danced by an all-female cast.

“The current roster is dancing magnificently, their whiz-bang physical talent fired up by passionate commitment,” raves The Miami Herald. “They do everything with knife-sharp clarity, but with a burning inner life that makes the dances glow.”

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater grew from a now-fabled performance in March 1958 at New York City’s 92nd Street Y. Led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American modern dancers, that performance forever changed the perception of American dance.
