Joni Mitchell’s Mingus
Featuring Jo Lawry, Kate McGarry and Luciana Souza
When it was released in 1979, Joni Mitchell’s Mingus was described by The Daily News as “a tapestry that affirms life through weaving arrangements containing blues, jazz, fusion, Afro-Cuban and even world music approaches.” Half of NJPAC’s concert will be devoted to that seminal LP, with additional selections by Mitchell and Mingus. Mitchell collaborated with Mingus on the eponymous album shortly before his death.
The recording will be interpreted by a triumvirate of acclaimed vocalists: Jo Lawry, who has worked with Sting, Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel and was a featured artist in the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom; multi-GRAMMY nominee Kate McGarry, who has performed on many of the world’s most renowned stages; and Luciana Souza, a GRAMMY-winning artist who has worked with James Taylor, Herbie Hancock and Bobby McFerrin, among others. They will be backed by Aaron Goldberg (piano), Keith Ganz (electric guitar), and Matt Penman (bass).

Half of this program is devoted to Carrington’s singular take on that music, in which she provides a bridge between jazz tradition and the music of now.
