Ladysmith Black Mambazo
The five-time GRAMMY-winning a cappella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo – catapulted to fame on Paul Simon’s iconic Graceland album – makes a welcome return to NJPAC.
Since their rich harmonies were first introduced to an international audience on the classic 1986 Graceland album, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has gone on to earn a whopping 19 GRAMMY Award nominations and five wins, the most recent this year for “Best World Music Album” for Shaka Zulu Revisited.
Nelson Mandela once famously labeled Ladysmith Black Mambazo “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World,” and that description has continued to follow this acclaimed, all-male ensemble through a career that’s repeatedly taken them to the top of the world music charts. In addition to working with Paul Simon, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has recorded with Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Josh Groban, Emmylou Harris and many others.
The group has provided music for the movies, earned a Tony Award nomination for its Broadway engagement, and was the subject of the Oscar-nominated documentary, On Tiptoe: Gentle Steps to Freedom.
NICO Kitchen + Bar will be open for this performance.
