Music and the Liberation of the People

Performances are free and open to the public. Parents are encouraged to bring children of all ages.

NJPAC is proud to present Music and the Liberation of the People, featuring Newark’s own cultural ensemble, Return To The Source. This multi-media production, written and directed by Junius Williams, tells the story of the music that inspired slave resistance and the American Civil Rights Movement; teaches the social and political roots of black music; and demonstrates its evolution from Spirituals to today’s popular genres of R&B and Hip Hop.

Return To The Source is noted for its music and education concerts, featuring Spirituals, Blues, Gospel, Jazz and Hip Hop. The group has performed at more than 300 grade schools throughout New Jersey, as well as college campuses throughout the country, cultural events and other venues where music and the message are important.
