The Commodores, Eric Benét, Leah Jenea, Felix Hernandez, and more!
The GRAMMY-winning Commodores (“Sail On,” “Brick House”), R&B favorite Eric Benét (“Georgy Porgy”), singer Leah Jenea (Fox’s The Four), DJ Felix Hernandez and other special guests celebrate 20 years of the Newark Downtown District with a free community concert at NJPAC!
The Newark Downtown District 20th Anniversary Concert kicks off with soul and R&B hits spun by WBGO DJ Felix Hernandez (Rhythm Revue) and is co-hosted by radio personalities Shaila Scott (WBLS 107.5 FM) and DJ Wallah (HOT 97). The outdoor event at NJPAC’s Chambers Plaza goes on rain or shine.
The Commodores have been releasing chart-topping hits for three decades, among them “Machine Gun,” “Three Times a Lady,” “Slippery When Wet,” and “Brick House.” The band, which sold more than 60 million records for Motown, continued onward through the 1983 departure of co-lead vocalist Lionel Richie to earn a GRAMMY Award for “Night Shift."
Four-time GRAMMY Award nominee Eric Benét (“You’re the Only One,” “Sometimes I Cry”) scored his breakthrough single, 1999’s “Spend My Life with You,” by teaming with Tamia, his memorable duet partner. He has toured with fellow contemporary R&B standard-bearers Anthony Hamilton and Lalah Hathaway.
Newark singer and songwriter Leah Jenea, a multiple first-place winner on Amateur Night at the Apollo, is known to TV audiences as a Season 2 finalist on The Four, Fox’s vocal competition show.
Food trucks will be on the grounds for purchases of meals and snacks and a Biergarten will serve beer, wine and mixed drinks.
Please note: NJPAC prohibits coolers, bags, pets, food and alcohol (except food and beverages purchased on site), and reserves the right to remove guests from the premises.
