Trilogy: An Opera Company – Sassy
New Jersey’s Trilogy: An Opera Company returns to NJPAC with Sassy, an exciting new operatic production that explores the spectacular life and sublime artistry of Newark’s own Sarah “Sassy” Vaughan.
Sassy journeys through Vaughan’s struggles and triumphs, both musically and biographically, bringing into focus some of the men she married, the artists she admired, and the greats with whom she worked, including fellow immortals Billy Eckstine, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker and Billie Holiday.
In this new work, librettist Sonya Beard and composer Dorothy Rudd Moore (whose previous work includes the operas Frederick Douglass and Papa Doc) utilize two versions of Vaughan – the young, wide-eyed Sarah as well as the older, sultry vocalist – moving musically from jazz to opera and back again, all in a celebration of a singular, unforgettable voice.
NICO Kitchen + Bar will be open for this performance.
