Are you ready to shine a spotlight on the stories that make Newark extraordinary? The Newark Reel Stories Challenge is back — your chance to celebrate the heart, soul and creativity of our city — and win up to $500 to fuel your next project!

What’s the Challenge?
Create a short film (less than seven minutes) that highlights the Newark experience. Whether your style is documentary, experimental or narrative, this is your opportunity to tell a story that captures Newark’s essence.
This year, filmmakers must include a scene shot in the South Ward (home of ArtsXChange, curators of the Reel Stories Challenge) — think landmarks, street signs and neighborhood gems — so judges can see the authenticity of Newark come alive on screen. We ask that filmmakers be available for the official screening on Thursday, January 29, at 6PM.
Criteria for Participation:
Film must meet one of the following criteria:
- Newark Resident/Native: The filmmaker is a current Newark resident or native of the city
- Newark-Centered: The film’s theme, narrative or culture highlights Newark
- Newark Landmark/Filmed in Newark: The film features a Newark landmark or is shot on location in the city
Films must meet all of the following criteria:
- Maximum Film Length: Seven minutes
- Submit your film by December 15, 2025
- Film Type: Documentary, experimental or narrative
- Film Challenge: Must include a scene from the South Ward
