The Role: Senior Vice President, Social Impact

Location: Newark, NJ

Reports To: President & Chief Executive Officer

Supervises: VP Arts Education, AVP Community Engagement, and Senior Director, Arts & Well-Being, and associated departmental staff. AVP Community Engagement has dotted line report to Executive Producer.

 

NJPAC (The New Jersey Performing Arts Center), located in downtown Newark, NJ, is the anchor cultural institution for the state of New Jersey. Since opening its doors in 1997, NJPAC has attracted over 11 million patrons, and reached over 2 million children and families through its arts education and community engagement programming. As a presenter of world-class performances on our campus and throughout the Northeast, and nationally through broadcast and touring productions, we are proud to be the nation’s most diverse performing arts center in terms of programming, audience and staff.

In its 26th anniversary season, the Arts Center is launching the expansion of many facets of its work with the construction of a new home for its arts education and community-driven performing arts programs and state-of-the-industry professional rehearsal studios for the development of new work. This facility, the Cooperman Center, which is slated to open in 2026, will be the cornerstone of a new neighborhood NJPAC is building on its campus that also includes public park spaces, apartments and townhomes, restaurants, retail and cultural venues.

We are seeking a full-time, on-site SVP, Social Impact whose role will be to advance our mission to harness the arts to benefit the communities we serve, and develop new pathways to share NJPAC’s unique programs.

 

This exciting new role will oversee three departments:

  • Community Engagement. NJPAC offers 200+ free programs per year at libraries, churches and community spaces throughout Greater Newark, with a focus on literacy, poetry, jazz, film and dance. We maintain six advisory councils and over 140 engaged partners. We are in the midst of launching new long-term partnerships with local community organizations in Newark that will increase the reach of these programs, prompt the creation of new offerings, and engage even more community members.
  • Arts Education. NJPAC is the state’s latest provider of arts education, serving more than 100,000 students and families annually. We offer student performances on our campus throughout our season, in-school residencies with professional teaching artists, summer and Saturday classes for children and teens, professional development and arts integration training for teachers, and more. NJPAC’s endowed Colton Institute for Training and Research in the Arts supports the department’s initiatives in arts education research, student evaluation, faculty training, and college and career programs. The Cooperman Center will enable a significant expansion of our arts education offerings.
  • Arts & Well-Being. This new initiative is charged with developing programs that use the arts to improve individual and community health, which includes a first-in-the-nation social prescribing collaboration between a health insurer, healthcare system and a performing arts center. New research into the intersection of arts and well-being, and best practices for maximizing impact, will be part of this department’s work, as will the creation of new programming.

These departments are engaged in work with overlapping goals and similar partners, and our SVP will enhance cross-department collaboration and unify efforts for maximum impact. The SVP will also build a strong relationship with the Executive Producer and Programming Department to enhance the opportunities for mainstage programming to include community and educational offerings. The SVP will possess deep commitment to and experience in working with diverse communities.

Position Summary: NJPAC Teaching Artists are professional artists and educators who teach a variety of arts disciplines in various environments across the state of New Jersey. Our programs are offered virtually, on-site and to schools, community centers and childcare centers throughout New Jersey. NJPAC Teaching Artists are on-call employees. Work fluctuates based on season, sales and TA availability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

NJPAC Arts Education

NJPAC has the largest arts education department in the state, serving nearly 112,000 families and students in grades Pre-K through 12; approx. 74% of participating students attend Title I schools. Programs include on-campus and in-school performances, artist-in-residencies, after-school and summer arts training, and professional development for teachers.

Position Summary:

The Senior Director/ Director of Arts Research and Impact is responsible for creating and implementing the research agenda and impact assessment strategy for the Arts Education Department and the Arts and Well-being initiative. This work will include designing and implementing use-inspired research studies – from the expected to the ingenious – as well as developing and testing relevant tools to measure, evaluate, and convey the Department’s impact. The successful candidate will be grounded in both artistic and scientific approaches and motivated by outcomes and impact at scale.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Subject to the policies and management direction established by the Vice President for Arts Education, the duties of Arts Education Senior Director/ Director Arts of Research and Impact shall include:

Research Agenda & Impact Strategy

  • Work collaboratively with the teams of Arts Education and Arts and Well-being to develop a department-wide impact measurement and assessment strategy.
  • Develop research goals and objectives that support the theory of change and are met both through the Department’s own research projects and through research partnerships.
  • Keep abreast of emerging research related to the Department’s impact goals and seek to support and apply that research for the good of those goals when appropriate
  • Conceptualize and manage the execution of reports that raise awareness of the Arts Center’s work.

Metrics as a Change Agent

  • Conceive and prioritize projects to develop and disseminate metrics, frameworks, and standards whose widespread adoption can help to scale best practices and quality programs
  • Develop research partnerships in alignment with the Department’s overall goal and objectives for impact
  • Lead the development of data and measurement products that other organizations can adopt to drive the impact of the arts in education and throughout the community

Program Evaluation

The Senior Director/ Director will work with all program teams including external consultants to ensure data gathering and evaluation systems are in place, meet IRB requirements when necessary, and that each program is continually improving and ultimately meeting its intended impact goals and objectives.

  • Oversee data collection, entry, and quality for programs on-campus and in-schools including securing school district and any IRB approvals when necessary
  • Analyze and synthesize quantitative and qualitative data and create systems for using data to provide ongoing feedback and support for program improvement
  • Conduct program observations, interviews, surveys, and focus groups
  • Implement and manage internal systems for conducting ongoing outcomes measurement and assessment
  • Design and develop evaluation plans, choose the most effective methodologies, instruments, and resources, and summarize and present findings

The Staff Accountant role is a position within the Finance department with a major focus on preparing and organizing financial transactions, focused on key aspects of daily, monthly, and annual business functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist in processing invoices, which includes organizing printed invoices, investigating correct coding if not provided, organizing for future review, entering them into the GL system, and filing completed payments with the appropriate backup

  • Discuss billing issues with vendors by providing friendly customer service and answering questions to resolve issues
  • Maintain integrity of vendor data, regularly
  • Prepare and submit daily bank deposits
  • Perform monthly reconciliations for balance sheet accounts
  • Research and apply for state unclaimed property
  • Maintain, update, and record documentation of the company’s fixed assets

The Role:              Assistant Manager of Performance Operations

Position Summary:

As a manager in the production office, the Assistant Manager of Performance Operations works with the Assistant Vice President of Performance Operations by aiding in the day to day stage and performance related operations, including stage schedules, the maintenance of stage related equipment and facilities, performance expense management and reporting. The Assistant Manager of Performance Operations assists the Senior Director of Production to oversee the daily stage labor and other contracted employees in order to successfully fulfill the production requirements of the event. The Assistant Manager of Performance Operations will specialize in managing hospitality, transportation, hotels for shows presented at and by NJPAC. Assignments include production management of pop, rock, comedy, community engagement and arts education, internal NJPAC, and Women@NJPAC presentations along with rentals of nonprofit and for-profit live events and broadcasts. They will also work closely with the other managers in scheduling day-wage hires.

Representative Duties and Responsibilities:

● Arrange, schedule and budget all backstage hospitality for all events. Including keeping stock of items as needed. Reducing budgets as possible by competitive bidding and careful scheduling.
● Arrange, schedule and budget lodging for artists. Create partnerships with local hotels, reducing budgets where
possible.
● Arrange, schedule and budget transportation for artists. Reducing budgets where possible.
● Communicate directly with artists and/or their representatives, regarding technical riders and any other
performance and hospitality/transportation/housing needs. Manage the approved plan.
● Oversee runners, including hiring, scheduling, payroll, and reporting.
● Coordinate catering needs for the Local 21 crew and for the artist.
● Supervise and manage Artist Assistants and contracted labor during an event.
● Facilitate the hiring, scheduling, and in conjunction Assistant Vice President of Performance Operations, supervise casual production staff including Temporary Assistant Production Managers, Stage Managers, Runners, and Lighting Designers as required by the productions.
● Advance and manage presentation of pop, rock comedy, community engagement and arts education
presentations, including rentals of nonprofit and for profit live events and broadcasts. Must be in regular
communication with clients to ensure all technical elements are implemented.
● Provide production support and guidance to clients that do not have experience in live events.
● Under the Assistant Vice President of Performance Operations’s guidance, formulate and implement plans to
maintain and improve quality of production standards for related operations.
● Plan and make recommendations to the Assistant Vice President of Performance Operations for the allotment of resources required to fulfill the production requirements assigned, including equipment, dressing rooms, wardrobe, and hospitality.
● Manage and supervise the IATSE Local 21 crew during all event calls while honoring their contract and upholding NJPAC production schedules.
● Create and maintain daily load-in, load-out, rehearsal, and performance schedules.
● Ensure the crew is staffed appropriately while balancing both the budget and technical needs of the event.
● Review technical riders ensuring all elements of the event can be met and arranged.
● Oversee the load-in, sound check, rehearsal, event, and load-out.
● Recommend production budgets including labor, hospitality, and materials required for performance. Control
expenditures within approved budgets.
● Work with NJPAC producers and NJPAC clients to maintain a budget of an event while keeping its artistic integrity.
● Find efficiencies within the production schedule to be within budget while continually striving for higher accuracy of all information presented internally and to clients.
● Close event documentation, including vendor invoices, crew payroll, contracted labor payroll and all other
production show expenses in a timely manner.
● Cover events for fellow production managers as necessary.
● Maintain and foster excellent relationships with clients to promote repeat business.
● Act as Evacuation Fire Marshall for backstage talent and guests.
● Establish clear communication with house management prior to and during an event to provide a smooth start of the event and aid in audience/artist related business.
● Under the Assistant Vice President of Performance Operation’s guidance, formulate and implement plans to
maintain and improve quality of standards for production operations.
● Evaluate and recommend capital improvements to theatrical equipment and to the interior of the theaters.
● Serve as backup of other managers, processing invoices, payroll, historical edits, keeping the Google calendar
current with the most up to date schedule, assisting with new hires and artist assistant on boarding and
collaborating with finance to ensure payments of vendors, contractors, and crew.
● Assist the Senior Production Manager with collaborating on the production workbooks.
● Perform related duties as assigned

Qualifications and Special Requirements:

● Three to Five years of experience in Company Management.
● Experience touring and managing presentation of pop, rock comedy, community engagement and arts education presentations along with rentals of nonprofit and for profit live events and broadcasts preferred.
● Experience with Production Management, Stage Management or Technical Theater; managing stagehands in a
collective bargaining environment, preferably in a multi-theater environment; experience interpreting the production needs of artists and other clients.
● Basic broadcast understanding is highly recommended.
● Knowledge of stage related activities such as carpentry, rigging, electrics, sound, props, costumes/wardrobe, stage design, touring, special effects, mechanization, drafting, structural engineering and theater design preferred
● Successful budgeting and control experience.
● Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Able to represent NJPAC to artists, clients, renters and
vendors.
● Ability to negotiate with artists’ management and visiting production managers along with varying types of renters.
● Ability to specify and secure outside services and materials to support NJPAC productions as needed.
● Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite, strong emphasis in Google Sheets, Google Docs, Excel, and Word.
● Experience with financial data entry is recommended. knowledge of ADP Time and Attendance a plus.
● Able to show initiative and work efficiently in stressful situations.
● Ability to set own priorities and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
● Must have extremely strong organizational skills, accuracy, attention to details and work habits.
● Strong problem-solving and logistics management skills are absolutely necessary.

Position Senior Director, Faculty and Creative Practice
Department: Arts Education

Position Summary:
The New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Arts Education Department is seeking a Senior Director of Faculty and Creative Practice. The position is responsible for the artistic expression across department programs and, through that lens, develop pedagogy, curricula, training and initiatives that align with the department’s vision and guiding principles. The goal is to strengthen the community of artists, teachers, students, families and community members to establish a creative hub that promotes innovation and art making. The position will research the intersection of artistic practice, the classroom, and the community, specifically in jazz, theater, hip hop arts and culture, arts integration, and early childhood for PreK – high school. The Senior Director of Faculty and Creative Practice will possess and cultivate a faculty who develop a deep understanding of community-embedded art initiatives, collaborative cultural approaches, and inclusive arts education practices. In direct support of the Vice President and in collaboration with the other department
Directors and the Faculty Leads, the Senior Director of Faculty and Creative Practice will develop a participatory community for creative artistic and educational practice placing NJPAC and the Arts Education Department at the center of innovation, leadership, and excellence.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Subject to the policies and management directions established by the Vice President for Arts Education, the duties of the Senior Director of Faculty and Creative Practice shall include but are not limited to:

Program Development (40%)
● In collaboration with the Vice President, develop a creative and educational research agenda, including general operating plans and annual goals, objectives, and priorities for faculty leads and the breadth of the department programs.
● Lead the design and development of creative engagement, arts educational, and learning opportunities for programs and training that:
o Align with the Department’s Mission, Strategic Plan, and broader organizational
priorities
o Leverages the assets of the Department
o Create visibility for Arts Education through innovative art-making and educational
approaches
o Incorporate instructional best practices to achieve optimal learning outcomes for
various stakeholders, including children, students, teachers, and community
members.
o Are feasible within organizational constraints and goals
o Reflect and enhance performing arts genres and the diversity and breadth of
contemporary issues
o Educate, inspire, and engage a broad range of students, faculty, and audiences

Program Management (40%)
● Cultivating a faculty community that sustains high retention and possesses a deep understanding of NJPAC teaching philosophy, excellent teaching practices, creative thinking and artistry, and strong collegiality.
● Responsible for maintaining a full and diverse roster of faculty.
● Work with Human Resources to recruit, hire, and onboard necessary faculty.
● In collaboration with the Senior Manager of Professional Development and Training, design and execute necessary training for the faculty to ensure knowledge of contemporary artistic approaches and sound pedagogical practices, including anti-racist, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive approaches.

● Further develop, build, and manage partnerships with external stakeholders—cultural institutions, educational professionals, community groups & leaders, government agencies

● Develop marketing strategies for programs in collaboration with Marketing and
Communications staff so programs achieve maximum reach and educational impact

●Ensure market material accurately reflects the creative and educational goals of the programs.

Financial Management (20%)
● Create annual program budgets that align with department goals, priorities and strategic plans.
● Responsible for maintaining program expenses, ensuring accuracy and alignment with assigned budgets.
● Approve payroll hours, and track vendor contract invoicing and payments.
● Work with the Development team to apply for funding opportunities from individual, government, foundation, and corporate sources.
● Manage donor visits and provide necessary reports for funders.

Qualifications and Special Requirements:
● A significant artistic record, demonstrated by the creation and production of 15 + original works with youth or original professional works.
● A robust creative research portfolio and a fully developed perspective and practice regarding teaching and creating.
● Possess an active creative practice grounded in innovative performance, deep community engagement or creative placekeeping.
● An exceptional artist-teacher with 10+ year teaching experience and who is able to build upon the department programs and the creative strengths of the faculty.
● Strong understanding of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion implementation including anti-racist practices.
● Demonstrated dedication to the sustainability of art and culture in our society, as well as committed to social justice.
● At least six (6) years experience in a leadership and administrative capacity responsible for producing, presenting, managing staff, and budgeting arts training projects and performing arts events for an arts center or presenting organization.
● A broad and deep understanding of creative and innovative practice in performing arts presentation, production, and/or arts education.
● Demonstrated ability to create educational programs and pedagogy grounded in a creative work and process.
● A background as a teaching artist is preferred, and an interest in and ability to
participate in curriculum development, design, and revision is required.
● A significant interest in transdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge and appreciation of various forms of the performing and experimental arts.
● A track record of performing and/or presenting in conventional and non-traditional forums.

●Extensive experience in supervising staff and faculty including conducting evaluations and annual reviews.
● The capability to attract, mentor, and support exceptional faculty and students is essential.
● Knowledge of the current trends and transformations in the artistic professional landscape and educational industries.
● An openness to sharing with and receiving from, others -ideas, experience and knowledge.
● Superb organizational and communication skills, and detail orientated, and flexible.
● A love of teaching and learning and a strong belief that successful artists must have strong skills in entrepreneurship and management.
● Bi-lingual preferred, Spanish a plus
● Willingness to take on additional responsibilities as requested. Some evening and weekend hours required.
● Demonstrated command of computer skills including Salesforce and databases and specifically Microsoft Suite is required.
● Masters or Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or be able to demonstrate knowledge and expertise in a comparably rigorous, culturally or artistically-specific manner.

Status: Non Exempt- Full Time

Position Summary:
The Ticket Sales & Service department is responsible for the fulfillment of subscriptions,
memberships,groups, single tickets, parking, gift certificates,External Group Sales
Reps, dinner and parking reservations. This includes processing ticket sales, generating
contracts, mailing of tickets, Remote Box Office (offsite) and excellent customer service
internally and externally. They must attain goals and maintain superior customer
relationships for all NJPAC customers. The Ticket Sales & Service Specialist will be
responsible for directly managing accounts in order to retain and grow customers into a
multi- ticket buyers and obtain new customers through numerous campaigns. They
must deliver customized/specialized service and sales and possess excellent
interpersonal and communication skills. They are also responsible for supporting
NJPAC’s Membership development programs and Arts Education which include inquiry
resolution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Sales experience is a MUST
  • Experience with Excel/Google
  •  Substantial amount of Outbound calls and handling of Inbound phone calls for
    single ticket, groups, subscriptions, new on sales, memberships, reservations for
    Nico’s, reservation for parking, multiple performance buyers, tier closure calls,
    cancellation calls and parking sales to high valued customers.
  •  Upsell Arts Education programs, Community Engagement events and Salon
    opportunities.
  •  Develop and deliver customized offers and solutions to high valued customers
  •  Handle face-to-face ticket, parking, gift certificate sales, and be present at the
    NJPAC box office on the night of performances in which groups are attending in order to resolve any issues. Must work and host any group sales events that are in conjunction with a show
  •  Process single ticket, group tickets, multiple ticket orders, membership and
    subscription orders in the ticketing system, along with advanced parking and gift
    certificate sales. Keep track of all customer related information in SalesForce.
  •  Manage assigned customer’s preferences in order to provide service based upon
    their needs.
  •  During peak hours, cover support for Box Office window operations as requested
    by the Box Office Manager on duty
  •  Generate sales reports to track their sales.
  •  Increase revenue by building relationships with all customers.
  •  Perform other department duties as assigned.
  •  Must be present at the theater on selected nights, holidays and weekends events.

Performance-based Ushers are needed for NJPAC 2023-2024 Season (weekly hours worked vary between 4 and 24). Ushers will be scheduled according to availability, skill set and performance calendar. This position is a Union job.

Responsibilities: 
 Must be friendly, polite and enthusiastic.
 Assist Head Usher with special requests as needed.
 Assist patrons by scanning tickets, greeting and escorting patrons to their seats, distributing programs, and attending to guests with special needs

Qualifications and Special Requirements: 
 High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
 Daytime availability/Weekend availability required
 Experience in guest/customer service or hotel/hospitality industry
 Ability to anticipate and fulfill the needs and concerns of guests.
 Possess a sensitive, friendly, engaging personality, and polished demeanor.
 Must be able to stand for long periods of time
