Math in Motion:
Using Creative Movement to Explore Math Fundamentals
Learn how dance can extend early math learning in the areas of number sense, classification, geometry, measurement and mathematical reasoning. Participants will explore how kinesthetic experiences can enhance math and movement skills as well as support literacy development, social interaction and self-regulation. Master Teaching Artist Rachel Knudson, DC/MD/VA Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist teaches ballet, modern dance and creative movement. Ms. Knudson has taught and performed in the Washington, D.C. area for over 20 years.
The Beat of a Different Drum:
Music and Drama Strategies for Children with Special Needs
Teachers will learn strategies for engaging children with special needs to joyfully interact with each other; to learn how to be independent but also part of a group; and to practice listening, turn taking and following directions. Valerie Bayne Carroll, DC/MD/VA Wolf Trap Master Teaching Artist trains new Institute Teaching Artists and leads teacher professional development workshops in music and drama around the country.
