Overview

Watch the performance:

What happens when a legendary trumpeter retires to Mexico for some peace and quiet? In Doc Severinsen’s case, you start jamming with guitar virtuoso Gil Gutiérrez and launch an incredible post-retirement “second act.” Learn all about their musical partnership in a special Facebook conversation hosted by GRAMMY® winning producer Seth Abramson.

Here’s how it all went down: GRAMMY® winner Doc Severinsen was bandleader for The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson for three decades, and his successful career became the model for every late-night bandleader to follow. In 2006, Doc moved to Mexico’s San Miguel de Allende, ostensibly to retire from performance. Within weeks, he was playing with Gil Gutiérrez, the magnificent Oaxaca-born guitarist and composer. Their ongoing collaboration became The San Miguel Five, an acclaimed quintet performing a mix of Latin and Gypsy jazz and standards. They’ve since performed with symphony orchestras across the United States, including their 2011 Carnegie Hall show with the New York Pops. Tune in for the inspiring true story behind this remarkable international jazz collaboration.
