For 150 years, The Bethany Baptist Church of Newark has been one of the leading African American houses of worship. The Church features monthly jazz in its Saturday evening Vesper services.

In May, Bethany Baptist welcomes jazz vocalist Tyreek McDole and his quintet. The rising star is fresh off his win at NJPAC’s 2023 Sassy Awards, only the second male singer in the contest’s history to take first place. (He’ll perform alongside other jazz stars at the Sarah Vaughan Centennial Concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center in April.) DownBeat hails the 24-year-old as a “smooth singer with a mellow baritone … recall[ing] the romantic styles of Johnny Hartman and Billy Eckstine.”
