Dorthaan's Place: Houston Person
Tenor saxophonist Houston Person, one of the most eclectic players in all of jazz, is known for his mastery of swing, hard bop and soul jazz – and for his singular approach to the Great American Songbook.
Person has recorded over 150 albums as a leader, and is also known for his extensive work with vocalist Etta Jones, a legendary musical partnership that lasted for over 30 years. During his illustrious career, Person has played everything from disco and gospel to pop and R&B, in addition to his trademark hard bop.
In recent years, Person has also become known for lending his relaxed expertise to popular standards. On albums like My Romance, In a Sentimental Mood, and Remember Love (a collaboration with double bassist Ron Carter), Person continues to lend his big, full-bodied sound to timeless tunes like “Laura,” “Blue Moon,” “The Very Thought of You,” “Skylark,” “My Funny Valentine,” and many more.
“Ballads, blues, R&B classics – gently but unerringly, Person’s soulful tenor saxophone brings out their beauty, enhancing a melody with a few deft strokes,” says The Guardian.
