New Jersey’s acclaimed Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, now celebrating its 25th anniversary season, is a troupe that finds inspiration in everything from the graceful lines of calligraphy to the thunderous motion of martial arts. This high-energy celebration of the Chinese New Year will spin traditional and contemporary music and dance into a colorful mélange sure to delight audiences of all ages.
Taiwan-born, New Jersey-based choreographer Nai-Ni Chen creates bold dance works that brilliantly fuse the freedom of American modern dance with the grace and splendor of Asian art – a creative space beyond cultural boundaries, where tradition meets innovation. Set to music ranging from Chinese folk to New Age compositions, Chen’s mesmerizing dances are inspired by a multitude of disciplines. The New York Times recently described her work as “visually striking … (a) choreographic whirlpool that never stops churning.” This performance is recommended for ages 8 and up.

In this workshop, led by Nai-Ni Chen and company members in NJPAC's Chase Room, participants will learn Chinese vocabulary through movement, as well as the Ribbon Dance, which originated more than 2,000 years ago and has been called the most representative Chinese folk dance.
