Overview
Fall is time for getting back to school, celebrating the harvest, indulging in pumpkin spice everything — and in many places, it’s election season, too! While federal elections may get the biggest headlines and the most time on the nightly news, state and local elections are arguably even more important. They’ll decide questions that have an immediate impact on all of us: Who oversees our schools, how much money we devote to social services and which laws and policies govern our cities and our state.
So make a plan to vote this fall — and make sure you’re an informed voter! Join us for a virtual conversation with experts and activists who can explain what’s at stake in November and how your vote will impact your life and the lives of your fellow citizens.
No matter what happens in Washington, D.C., your participation in our democracy will shape life and legislation in New Jersey, and in your neighborhood.
Our conversation will be moderated by Ma’isha Aziz, attorney, activist and adjunct professor at Rutgers University.
Our panelists include:
Danielle Combs, Executive Director of the NAACP New Jersey State Conference
Nathan A. Duguid, Rutgers University–Newark sophomore and the founder of the Young Voters Association (YVA)
Dr. Angela Garretson, former Mayor of Hillside, currently Hillside’s 2nd Ward Councilwoman and Chief External Affairs Officer at the New Jersey Institute of Technology
Henal Patel, the Law & Policy Director at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice (NJISJ)
The program includes a poetry reading, in partnership with Dodge Poetry, by Jesse Burns. In addition to being a published writer, Burns is the Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of New Jersey.
