Overview

Grab your book and touch grass (literally)! We’re making reading an outdoor sport with the new Reading at the Plaza series. Bring a lawn chair or blanket … and get comfy on NJPAC’s redesigned front yard with our featured selection or a book of your own choosing. Reading at the Plaza includes silent reading time, live poetry performances and a book talk facilitated by producing partner Source of Knowledge, a Black community center in the heart of Newark. Let yourself feel grounded in a good story!

Bring your children for a special Children’s Reading at the Plaza with local author Virtuous Cornwall. She will lead an interactive reading of one of her picture books followed by a hands-on activity to inspire young writers.

Adults can participate in silent reading and a book talk on this month’s selection: Kin by Tayari Jones. An Oprah’s Book Club Pick, the novel is about mothers and daughters, friendship and sisterhood, and the complexities of being a woman in the American South. Copies of the book will be available for purchase in advance (order here) or at a pop-up store at the event from Source of Knowledge.

In partnership with Dodge Poetry, the program will open with a performance by Mia X, the City of Newark’s inaugural Poet Laureate, and a guided breathing experience led by Breathe, then Read™.  Attendees will be entered into a giveaway for free NJPAC tickets.

Grab a bite to enjoy with your book! The Yard, located nearby in Military Park, is offering a 15% discount to those who purchase food on July 29 from 5:30 – 7:30PM. Use discount code: SOK/NJPAC0729.

Note: Tayari Jones will not be in attendance.

**In the case of inclement weather, the July 29 session will move to July 31.
