Overview
In late November 1776, George Washington and his army spent several days in Newark. Here, Thomas Paine started writing The American Crisis, with its enduring opening line, “These are the times that try men’s souls.” From Newark, Washington warned the Continental Congress that, “The situation of our Affairs is truly critical.” As it turned out, Washington’s time in Newark turned an army on the brink of collapse into a force that succeeded in pushing the British out of New Jersey.
The presenter is Timothy J. Crist, Co-Founder and President of the Newark History Society and author of New Englanders in a New Land: Newark in the Proprietary Period, 1666–1702.
Light refreshments will be served.
This program is co-sponsored by NJPAC, Newark History Society and the Newark Public Library.
